Today what is left from Basilica of Saint John the evangelist stand two kilometers away from Ephesus Ancient City. Basilica was built on the burial site of Saint John the Evangelist by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century A.D. Actually the basilica standing today is the latest building built on this hill in the name of Saint John. As we know a little wooden hut was built on this hill after the death of Saint John and on 4th century A.D. a little chapel was built here. Building we see now is the latest installment from 6th century. Tomb of St. John the Evangelist, located under the main central dome, was one of the most sacred sites in the Middle Ages and tomb is still visitable today. Common belief says that John wrote his gospel in Ephesus at the request of other disciples, then died in this church which was built in his name. Today chuch has a cross plan and only some outer walls can be seen due to earthquakes hit the area in fourteen hundreds.
